Accessibility

Document last updated : December 2016

The Pennington is an historic building. However, its refurbishment in the early 21st century has ensured accessibility through much of the ground floor and all our public rooms to wheelchair users and baby buggies plus powered chairs. We have one bedroom with fully-equipped bathroom on the ground floor, close to reception and bar and restaurant and several others which are on the ground floor with limited need to manage steps. We welcome all visitors including those with restricted mobility and other disabilities and will do our best to assist. It is helpful if customers let us know when they book of any special requirements they might have.

The following statement is a summary of our provision. If you have any specific questions please feel free to call us and we will endeavour to help.

Pre-arrival

  • The Ravenglass mainline railway station is approximately 150m away with level paths leading down through the village car park to the Pennington.
  • There is a local taxi service and also an accessible taxi/transport service. With prior notice, we can make a booking for you.
  • There is very limited mobile phone reception in the area.
  • You can contact us via telephone, fax or email. Please see contact information below for details.
  • We do not have the facility to supply menus in Braille but our menus are in PDF format on our website for prior download.

By road from the North

From Carlisle, follow the A595 for Cockermouth continuing towards Whitehaven and Barrow. Alternatively leave the M6 at Penrith and follow the A66 west towards Workington, then the A595 south to Whitehaven and Barrow. There is a signposted right turn for Ravenglass. Follow the road down through the village. Where the road turns away from the seafront, the Pennington can be seen ca 50m ahead on the left, beyond the Inn At Ravenglass and Rosegarth Guesthouse. Follow the road round to the village car park where the entrance to the hotel car park can be found at the rear of the building. The journey from Carlisle should take about an hour and a half.

By road from the South

Leave the M6 Motorway at junction 36.
Follow the signs for Barrow-in-Furness on the A590. Before you get to Barrow, turn right at Greenodd onto the A5092 and follow this road for Workington and Whitehaven. This road joins the A595 which will bring you to the Ravenglass junction. When you have passed Muncaster Castle's entrances and main car park, here is a signposted left turn for Ravenglass. The journey from junction 36 should take about an hour and a quarter.

Car Parking Facilities

The hotel car park is at the rear, comprising a hard core surface with some tarmac. There is level pedestrian access down the narrow lane to the side of the hotel to the main street and hotel front door. Customers with limited mobility are welcome to drop bags or passengers at the front door before driving round the back to park. There are no designated spaces in the car park.

Toilets

There are signed accessible toilets on the ground floor of the hotel, close to Reception.

Public Rooms

Except for the Morning Room which is carpeted, all public rooms have tiled floors.

There is level access through standard or wider than standard doorways from the hotel front door and reception into the main Estuary Bar & Grill dining room and the rear bar.

There is level access from Reception through a standard width door into the residents' Morning Room.

The rear patio courtyard is accessed from the rear bar through a narrower-than-standard door with a small step. However, this space can be reached on level paths throughout via the hotel front door and by turning left and left again around the building.

The Garth Suite function room is accessible from the rear courtyard via a standard-width door with a small step.

Our dining areas comprise flexible furniture with tables of standard height and either legs at each corner or central pedestals. Chairs are without arms and can be moved to accommodate wheelchairs.
